“This Is Probably Why She Ended It”- Delta Police Spokesperson Addresses Backlash Over Favour Agbro’s Case

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, has criticised the wave of victim-blaming comments that trailed the death of 20-year-old Favour Agbro, stating that such reactions may have worsened the emotional pain she experienced before her death.

Edafe expressed his disappointment over what he described as “despicable” comments from some social media users following the arrest of popular content creator, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, also known as Odogwu Asaba.

In a post shared on X on July 16, the Police spokesperson condemned the harsh reactions directed at Favour and suggested that the judgment she faced from the public could have contributed to her decision to take her own life.

“This is probably the reason she chose to end it,” Edafe wrote, referring to the way survivors of abuse are often criticised instead of supported.

The Police officer noted that negative societal attitudes towards victims can make them feel isolated, discourage them from speaking out, and add to the trauma they have already endured.

According to the police, Favour had travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after she was invited by 40-year-old Odogwu Asaba for content creation training. Authorities alleged that she was taken to a hotel, where she was subjected to torture and sexual assault.

Before her death, Favour reportedly made a video detailing her experience before consuming insecticide. She later died while undergoing medical treatment.

Following a petition from her family, the Police arrested Odogwu Asaba, who remains in custody as investigations into the allegations continue.

Although many Nigerians condemned the alleged actions of the suspect, some social media users blamed Favour for what happened to her. The comments have since sparked widespread criticism, with many calling for greater empathy and support for survivors of abuse.

Bright Edafe’s reaction has further renewed conversations about the impact of victim-shaming and the need for society to provide encouragement rather than judgment to people who come forward with abuse allegations.
