South East Democratic Movement Denies Endorsement of Any 2027 Presidential Candidate
Awka, Anambra State – The South East Democratic Movement (SEDM) has dismissed reports suggesting that it has endorsed or adopted any aspirant for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, describing such claims as false and unauthorized.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator and Convener, Comrade Okechukwu Cyril-Nwuche, the organization clarified that it has not pledged support to any individual seeking the nation’s highest office ahead of the 2027 polls.
According to the statement dated June 22, 2026, SEDM remains committed to a thorough consultation process involving key stakeholders across the country before taking any position on the presidential race.

The movement explained that it is currently engaging political leaders, traditional rulers, youth groups, women organizations, professional associations, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to assess the competence, character, capacity, and vision of prospective candidates.
SEDM described itself as a leading socio-political advocacy platform focused on promoting democratic values, good governance, economic development, social justice, national unity, and the political advancement of the South East region within a united Nigeria.
The organization noted that the 2027 presidential election presents a crucial opportunity for Nigerians to elect leaders capable of addressing the country’s pressing challenges and fostering inclusive national development.
“We shall not be stampeded into making a premature endorsement,” the statement emphasized.
The group therefore urged members of the public, political actors, and media organizations to disregard any statement, publication, or social media report claiming that SEDM has endorsed a presidential candidate, insisting that such information does not reflect its official position.
SEDM further assured Nigerians that it would publicly announce its preferred presidential candidate after concluding its consultations and internal deliberations. The announcement, according to the movement, is expected before the end of August 2027.
The organization reiterated its commitment to issue-based politics and pledged to support leadership capable of guaranteeing security, economic prosperity, national unity, infrastructural development, and a better future for all Nigerians.

SOUTH EAST DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT (SEDM) HAS NOT ENDORSED ANY PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE FOR 2027 JANUARY ELECTION
We wish to categorically state that the South East Democratic Movement has not endorsed, adopted, or pledged support to any individual seeking the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the forthcoming 2027 elections.
The South East Democratic Movement (SEDM) is a leading socio-political advocacy platform dedicated to promoting democratic values, good governance, economic development, social justice, national unity, and the political advancement of the South East geopolitical zone within a united and prosperous Nigeria. The Movement serves as a credible voice for millions of citizens across the region and beyond, engaging in policy advocacy, political education, leadership assessment, voter mobilization, and constructive engagement with stakeholders at all levels of governance. Through its activities, SEDM seeks to strengthen democracy, advance the collective interests of Ndigbo, and contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
As a pan-South East socio-political movement committed to the advancement of democracy, good governance, equity, justice, national development, and the protection of the interests of Ndigbo within the Nigerian federation, we are currently engaged in extensive consultations with stakeholders across the country. These consultations involve political leaders, traditional rulers, youth organizations, women groups, professional bodies, civil society organizations, and other critical interest groups.
Our objective is to carefully evaluate the aspirations, manifestoes, competence, character, capacity, and commitment of prospective presidential candidates towards addressing the numerous challenges confronting Nigeria and ensuring inclusive national development.
The South East Democratic Movement believes that the 2027 presidential election presents a critical opportunity for Nigerians to make informed choices that will shape the future of our nation. Consequently, we shall not be stampeded into making a premature endorsement.
We therefore urge members of the public, political actors, and the media to disregard any present or future statement, publication, or social media post claiming that SEDM has endorsed any candidate. Such claims are false, unauthorized, and do not represent the position of our movement.
We wish to assure Nigerians that upon the conclusion of our consultations and internal deliberations, the South East Democratic Movement will publicly unveil and formally announce the presidential candidate that it considers most suitable to receive its support. This announcement is expected to be made before the end of August 2027.
The Movement remains committed to promoting issue-based politics and supporting leadership that will guarantee security, economic prosperity, national unity, infrastructural development, and a better future for all Nigerians.
