2027 Ebonyi Governorship: Pro-Nwifuru, Odii Support Groups Clash Over Power Rotation

Political groups aligned with Governor Francis Nwifuru and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the 2023 election, Chief Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, have traded words over the contentious issue of power rotation ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ebonyi State.

The latest disagreement followed a call by the Ebonyi South Youth Assembly on Odii, popularly known as Anyichuks, to abandon any ambition of contesting the 2027 governorship election, arguing that such a move would violate the state’s long-standing rotational leadership arrangement.

The youth group, which said it represents the interests of young people from Afikpo North, Edda, Ohaozara, Ivo and Onicha Local Government Areas, maintained that political stability in Ebonyi State has largely been sustained through adherence to the principle of equity, fairness and justice, particularly the unwritten agreement on rotational leadership among the three senatorial zones.

In a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Odii Njoku, the group urged political stakeholders and residents of Ebonyi South Senatorial District to support Governor Nwifuru and preserve what it described as the state’s established political balance.

The group further warned politicians and voters from the zone against supporting Odii’s alleged governorship project, insisting that maintaining the rotational arrangement remained critical to peace, unity and political stability in the state.

However, the position of the Ebonyi South Youth Assembly was swiftly rejected by a pro-Odii support group, Anyi Ga Emeya, which accused the youth body of attempting to distract the public from the core issues of governance and development.

In a statement jointly signed by its coordinators from the five local government areas of Ebonyi South Senatorial District, the group insisted that competence, vision and leadership capacity should guide voters in choosing the next governor rather than zoning considerations.

The statement was signed by Orji Oko Akanu of Edda Local Government Area, Pascal Okochi of Afikpo North, Chukwuemeka Ijeh of Ivo, Okereke Ndubuisi of Ohaozara and Successful David of Onicha Local Government Area.

According to the group, Odii has demonstrated a commitment to the welfare of Ebonyi people through numerous empowerment initiatives, educational interventions and community development projects funded with his personal resources.

The coordinators described the businessman and philanthropist as a leader capable of accelerating the state’s development and improving the living conditions of residents if elected governor.

They urged Ebonyi people not to be swayed by what they termed the “4+4” political mantra, arguing that voters should focus on development, infrastructure and economic progress rather than tenure calculations.

“We voted for development and improved living standards, not political slogans. What should matter is who possesses the capacity and vision to move Ebonyi State forward,” the group stated.

The pro-Odii group also dismissed the existence and legitimacy of the Ebonyi South Youth Assembly, describing its members as “a few elements of distraction” and challenging them to publicly defend their position.

The group further argued that previous governorship contests in Ebonyi State featured candidates from different senatorial zones competing freely, noting that democracy guarantees every qualified citizen the right to seek elective office.

The exchange has brought the debate over zoning and leadership succession to the forefront of political discourse in Ebonyi State, barely a year after the inauguration of Governor Nwifuru’s administration.

Political analysts say the disagreement reflects the early alignments and interests shaping the build-up to the 2027 governorship election, with supporters of rotational leadership emphasizing equity and political stability, while advocates of an open contest insist that competence and developmental credentials should be the overriding considerations.

Although the major political parties are yet to officially commence activities for the next election cycle, the growing public debate suggests that questions surrounding power rotation and succession may dominate Ebonyi’s political landscape in the coming months.
