July 26, () — Peter Obi has reaffirmed his commitment to serving only one term if elected Nigeria’s president in 2027, insisting he will leave office after four years.

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) made the declaration during an interview on Sunday Politics, dismissing suggestions that his promise of a single-term presidency was merely an electoral strategy.

Obi’s comments followed remarks by his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who disclosed that both men had agreed Obi would serve a single four-year term if they won the 2027 presidential election.

Responding to the issue, the former Labour Party presidential candidate said the arrangement was a mutual agreement that should be honoured.

“As gentlemen, we must respect the agreement,” Obi said, adding that he did not require more than four years to demonstrate the direction he believes Nigeria should take.

“I don’t need more than four years to show the path Nigeria will take. It’s a simple thing,” he said.

Obi reiterated that his position was unequivocal, saying: “I will serve for four years — full stop. If you want me, it’s four years, full stop — not a day more.”

The former Anambra State governor has consistently argued that effective governance depends more on leadership and policy implementation than on the length of time spent in office.

His latest remarks are expected to fuel political debate ahead of the 2027 general election, particularly over the feasibility of a single-term presidency and the implications of any pre-election power-sharing arrangement between the NDC’s presidential ticket.
