Adeshina, Onojuvwevwo Arrive in Glasgow as Athletics Events Begin

Nigeria’s medal hopes in athletics at the 2026 Commonwealth Games have received a boost with the arrival of high jumper Temitope Adeshina and quarter-miler Ella Onojuvwevwo in Glasgow.

The US-based athletes joined Team Nigeria’s camp at different times over the weekend as track and field events got underway on Monday.

Adeshina, Nigeria’s women’s high jump record holder, is set to compete at her second Commonwealth Games after making her debut at Birmingham 2022.

The 27-year-old had faced uncertainty over her participation due to travel challenges, but those concerns were put to rest following her arrival in Glasgow on Saturday.

She enjoyed an impressive 2026 NCAA season, remaining unbeaten and winning all available indoor and outdoor titles. With a season-best clearance of 1.97m, Adeshina is considered one of Nigeria’s strongest medal contenders in the field events.

Meanwhile, LSU athlete Onojuvwevwo will make her Commonwealth Games debut and is expected to represent Nigeria in the women’s 4x400m relay.

The 21-year-old arrives in Glasgow in strong form, having recorded a season-best time of 49.47 seconds in the women’s 400m.

Nigeria’s athletics campaign also begins today with the men’s 100m heats, where reigning national champion Favour Ashe and Fakorede Adekalu will seek to advance to the semi-finals.

Miracle Ezechukwu will compete in the women’s 100m heats, while Sade Olatoye will take part in the women’s hammer throw and Eucharia Iyiazi will compete in the women’s F57 para shot put event.
