APM Gains Four, SDP One As Five Reps Defect From PDP, APC

June 04, (MEDIA TODAY) — Five members of the House of Representatives have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing unresolved internal crises and factional divisions within their former political parties.

The defections were announced by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, during plenary on Thursday after separate letters from the lawmakers were read on the floor of the House.

The APM emerged as the major beneficiary of the latest political movement in the lower chamber, securing four lawmakers, while the SDP gained one member.

Among the defectors was Jeremiah Umaru, who represents Akwanga/Nasarawa Eggon/Wamba Federal Constituency of Nasarawa State. Umaru defected from the APC to the SDP.

Others are lawmakers from Bauchi State, including Muhammed Shehu, representing Zaki Federal Constituency; Aminu Garu of Bauchi Federal Constituency; Sani Tanko of Shira/Giade Federal Constituency; and Mansur Soro of Darazo/Ganjuwa Federal Constituency. They defected from the PDP to the APM.

In their separate letters to the House, the lawmakers attributed their decisions to persistent internal disputes, factionalisation, and widening divisions within their former political parties.

According to the letters read by the Speaker, the lawmakers argued that the crises within their parties had become increasingly difficult to reconcile and had affected the stability and cohesion of the party structures.
