  • The FCT Minister says President Bola Tinubu will face a far easier re-election battle than in 2023, insisting the opposition has been “crippled” and “depleted” by divisions, defections and lack of a coherent national strategy.

  • Reacting to Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election, Wike argues that governorship polls are shaped by local dynamics and cannot be used to gauge Tinubu’s chances in a presidential election, warning opposition politicians against reading too much into the Osun result.

  • Wike rejects allegations of Federal Government interference in the Osun election, claiming that if Tinubu had deployed the full weight of federal power, the APC would have won. He contrasts the election with the 2019 Rivers poll, when he says the state witnessed overwhelming “federal might.”

  • The minister says any group seeking to unseat an incumbent president must spend years building a strong, vibrant nationwide structure rather than scrambling to find a political platform shortly before the election, insisting that the present opposition lacks the organisation to defeat Tinubu.

August 18, () — Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has delivered one of the most combative assessments yet of Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the 2027 general election, declaring that the battle for the presidency is effectively over if the present political configuration remains unchanged.

In a blunt message to opposition politicians, Wike said President Bola Tinubu would face a significantly easier re-election battle in 2027 than the contest that brought him to power in 2023.

His verdict was unequivocal: “If it is this 2027 election against Bola Ahmed Tinubu, no, forget it. It’s over.”

Wike, who spoke in Abuja on Tuesday while reacting to the outcome of last Saturday’s Osun State governorship election, described the opposition as “crippled” and “depleted,” arguing that political defections, internal divisions and the absence of a sustained national strategy had left President Tinubu facing no formidable challenger.

“This election, the 2027 election, will be the easiest election for Mr President”, Wike said, contrasting the anticipated contest with the 2023 presidential election, which he described as “tough” and uncertain for Tinubu.

The minister’s comments came against the backdrop of growing opposition efforts to build a coalition capable of challenging the APC in 2027 and the recent victory of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, which opposition politicians have sought to portray as a setback for the ruling party.

Dismissing the interpretation, Wike declared: ‘They Finished Themselves’

The FCT minister said the opposition had squandered the period since the 2023 general election, failing to build the kind of political organisation required to defeat a sitting president.

According to him, a serious opposition seeking to remove an incumbent government should have spent years consolidating its structures, mobilising supporters and developing a clear national strategy. Instead, he said, opposition politicians were moving from one political platform to another in search of a party on which to contest the next election.

“This election, where the opposition has been crippled, you know what it means? Depleted; they finished them”, Wike said.

He added that an opposition capable of dislodging a government must be “strong” and “vibrant” and should have spent more than four years preparing for the election.

“Not opposition that is looking for a party to run to. Today, they’re going to Party A. So, you see, that kind of opposition can never win”, he said.

Osun Victory ‘Not Defeat Of Tinubu

Wike also aimed at attempts to turn Adeleke’s victory in Osun into a referendum on Tinubu’s administration.

Adeleke won the August 15 governorship election on the platform of the Accord Party, defeating the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji. The outcome immediately triggered competing interpretations, with opposition figures pointing to the result as evidence that the ruling party remains vulnerable ahead of 2027.

Wike argued that the Osun election was fundamentally a state-level contest driven by local political dynamics and should not be interpreted as a national defeat for Tinubu.

“Governorship elections rely on local variables, but a national election is a completely different ballgame”, he said.

The minister also questioned claims by opposition politicians that they contributed to Adeleke’s victory while simultaneously fielding candidates against him. His argument was that if opposition parties genuinely intended to work together in Osun, they should have withdrawn their candidates before the election and formally backed a single candidate.

Instead, he said, parties that lost the election were attempting to claim credit after Adeleke had emerged victorious.

In perhaps his most provocative intervention on the Osun result, Wike said the Federal Government could have secured victory for the APC if President Tinubu had been determined to win the election at all costs.

“If the President wanted to win the Osun State election at all costs, I would have been there, and we will win it, and there’s nothing the governor can do”, Wike said.

The minister insisted, however, that the government did not deploy what he described as “federal might” in the election.

“There was no federal might used in Osun. When you see the force and might of the Federal Government, you will know”, he said, adding that the President’s conduct demonstrated a willingness to allow democratic processes to run their course.

Challenging those alleging federal interference in Osun to compare the election with what he described as the experience of Rivers State during the 2019 elections, the FCT Minister said:

“They don’t know what federal might is. I think they should come and ask people like us who faced federal might in 2019. In Rivers State, in 2019, we saw what is called federal might. We saw soldiers taking over everywhere. Did anything like that happen in Osun?”
