World Hepatitis Day 2026, WHO Urges Test, Treat, Eliminate Hepatitis

The global community marked this year’s World Hepatitis Day on Tuesday 28 July 2026 with a renewed call for governments and individuals to prioritize testing, treatment, and vaccination to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030.

With the Theme “LETS BREAK IT DOWN, REMOVE THE BARRIERS”, focusing on scaling up access to hepatitis testing and treatment, especially in low and middle-income countries like Nigeria.

The World Health Organization, WHO, has estimated 354 million people worldwide live with hepatitis B and C, and over 1.1 million deaths occur yearly from liver cirrhosis and liver cancer caused by the disease.

In Nigeria, health experts say viral hepatitis remains a major public health challenge, with millions unaware of their status due to limited screening and awareness.

Speaking on a special television program on NBS TV as part of activities to celebrate the day in Nasarawa State, Dr. Joshua Moses, Deputy Director Ministry Of Health, Doubles as program coordinator Viral Heparities in Nasarawa State said hepatitis B and C can be prevented through vaccination and safe practices, and can be cured or effectively managed if detected early.

_The good news is that Heparities is curable, the major problem is that many people don’t know they are infected until they go for blood check or blood transfusion. The message this year is simple: Get tested, get treated, and get vaccinated against hepatitis B , the expert said.

The Nasarawa State Ministry of Health and partner organizations used the occasion to offer free hepatitis B and C screening, counseling, and vaccination. They also called for increased funding, community awareness, and integration of hepatitis services into primary healthcare.

Health authorities emphasized that eliminating hepatitis is possible with government will, public awareness, and personal responsibility.
