Abure Group No Longer a Threat to Labour Party, Says Abia LP Chairman
The Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Abia State, Hon. Peter Azubuike, has dismissed fears over the activities of the faction loyal to former national chairman Julius Abure, insisting that the party remains united and focused ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at a media briefing in Umuahia on Monday, Azubuike described the faction as politically irrelevant, stating that the Labour Party remains intact under the leadership recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Using an analogy, he compared the faction to “a snake whose head has been cut off,” saying its continued activities have no meaningful political effect.
“There is absolutely nothing to worry about. The Labour Party remains one united family, and the structure recognised by INEC is intact,” he said.
Azubuike explained that the current leadership had reconciled aggrieved members and strengthened the party’s grassroots presence across the 17 local government areas of Abia State.
He also rejected claims that another faction could determine the party’s governorship candidate, stressing that the Labour Party belongs to its members and critical stakeholders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), rather than any individual.
The party chairman further expressed confidence that Governor Alex Otti’s achievements in office have created a new wave of public support capable of delivering victory for all Labour Party candidates in the 2027 elections.
According to him, the governor’s performance has restored the confidence of Abians and positioned the Labour Party for another successful outing at the polls.
