President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has successfully intervened in the prolonged political crisis rocking Rivers State, brokering a truce between key political figures—Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, and Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule.

The high-level peace meeting was held behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday and brought together major stakeholders in the state’s political conflict. Also in attendance were other lawmakers and influential leaders from Rivers State.

This crucial dialogue marked the first public appearance of Governor Fubara with President Tinubu since the president declared a state of emergency in the state on March 18. At the time, the emergency decision had led to the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the state assembly, following rising political tensions and a breakdown in governance.

Thursday’s session was aimed at finding a lasting resolution to the deepening rift that had threatened the political stability of the oil-rich state. According to sources close to the meeting, the session witnessed frank discussions and a firm push for reconciliation.

Images released after the meeting showed President Tinubu flanked by Wike and Fubara, all smiles—an image widely interpreted as a symbol of progress and renewed cooperation among the warring factions.

The presidency is yet to release the official communique from the session, but insiders suggest that all parties agreed to work towards a peaceful resolution and the restoration of functional governance in Rivers State.

This latest development is seen as a major step towards calming tensions in the state and rebuilding trust among its political leadership. It also reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to using dialogue and diplomacy to manage internal conflicts and uphold democratic governance.
