EU Confirms 2027 Nigeria Election Mission After Reports of Observer Snub

August 11, () — The European Union (EU) has confirmed that it will deploy an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM) to Nigeria for the 2027 general elections, rejecting reports that it declined an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The EU Delegation to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) said the mission would comprise between two and four independent experts who would be formally accredited as observers by INEC.

The clarification followed reports that the EU had turned down INEC’s invitation because of concerns over worsening insecurity in Nigeria and the alleged hostile treatment of its observers and officials following the publication of its final report on the 2023 elections.

In a statement issued on Monday by Modestus Chukwulaka, the EU Delegation said it was surprised by what it described as “inaccurate press reports” concerning its position on the 2027 elections.

According to the delegation, INEC formally invited the EU to deploy observers for the 2027 elections in a letter dated 17 April 2026. The EU said it responded on 28 July, thanking the electoral commission for the invitation and confirming its decision to deploy an Electoral Expert Mission.

“The EU will field an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM), composed of two to four independent experts, who will formally be accredited as observers with INEC,” the delegation said.

Why EU Issued Clarification

The clarification suggests that concerns over insecurity and previous tensions surrounding the EU’s election assessments have not led the bloc to withdraw from the 2027 electoral process.

The EU has previously deployed election observation missions to Nigeria, including during the 2023 general elections, when its observers assessed the conduct of the polls and issued recommendations on electoral reforms.

The delegation urged media organisations to verify reports concerning its activities directly with its Communication Office to avoid the circulation of what it described as misleading information.

The development comes as Nigeria begins preparations for the 2027 elections, with INEC expected to oversee one of the country’s most consequential electoral cycles amid continuing scrutiny of electoral credibility, security and institutional reforms.
