Fear, Pressure or Strategy? The Untold Story Behind Mascot Uzor Kalu’s Exit From Abia APC Contest

The political landscape within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State shifted dramatically on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, following the sudden withdrawal of Mascot Uzor Kalu from the party’s governorship contest.

Kalu’s exit came barely 24 hours after he was officially cleared to participate in the APC governorship primary scheduled for Thursday, May 21, 2026.

His withdrawal now leaves former Minister of Science and Technology, Chief Henry Ikoh, and businessman Mr. Eric Opah as the two remaining contenders for the party’s ticket. Notably, both aspirants are from Abia Central Senatorial District.

Confirming the development, the Abia APC Publicity Secretary, Comrade Uche Aguoru, disclosed that Kalu communicated his decision in a letter dated May 20 and addressed to the state party chairman.

In the letter, Mascot Kalu explained that his decision followed wide consultations with family members, political associates, friends, and stakeholders across the state.

He described the move as painful but necessary, insisting it was made in the interest of fairness, equity, and unity within the party.

Kalu also linked his withdrawal to the emergence of his elder brother, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, as the APC senatorial candidate for Abia North ahead of the 2027 elections. According to him, stepping aside would create a more level playing field for other aspirants in the governorship race.

He further argued that Abia Central Senatorial District should be allowed to complete its expected eight-year turn in the state’s power-sharing arrangement, in line with the principles of zoning and equity.

Despite pulling out of the race, Mascot Kalu reaffirmed his commitment to the APC and urged his supporters to remain loyal and actively involved in the party’s activities.

Reacting to the development, APC stakeholder Mr. Ikechukwu Nwoke said the withdrawal could spark fresh political consultations and possible realignments within the party as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.
