Brazil Leave It Late to Edge Japan, Book Place in Last 16

Brazil needed a stoppage-time winner to overcome a spirited Japan side, claiming a dramatic 2-1 victory on Monday to secure their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The five-time world Champions entered the Round of 32 clash as overwhelming favourites, but they were pushed to the limit by a disciplined Japanese team that defended resolutely and threatened whenever opportunities arose.

Despite controlling 60 per cent of possession and creating a steady stream of chances, Brazil found themselves behind in the 29th minute after Japan capitalised on one of their rare attacks to stun the Seleção.

Japan’s compact defensive shape frustrated Brazil throughout the first half, with goalkeeper Zion Suzuki producing a series of impressive saves to preserve his side’s advantage heading into the break.

Brazil emerged with renewed urgency after halftime, making immediate tactical changes that shifted the momentum.Their persistence paid off in the 56th minute when they finally found an equaliser, setting up a tense finish as the South American giants searched relentlessly for a winner.

The Samurai Blue refused to retreat, continuing to defend with determination while looking to exploit counter-attacking opportunities.

Their physical approach, reflected in 13 fouls and three yellow cards, disrupted Brazil’s rhythm for much of the contest.

As extra time appeared inevitable, Brazil produced one final moment of quality. Deep into stoppage time, the decisive goal arrived to complete a dramatic comeback and send the Seleção through to the last 16.

Brazil finished with 20 shots, seven of them on target, while forcing Japan’s defence into a relentless rearguard action.

Vinicius Junior remained a constant attacking threat down the left flank, Matheus Cunha worked tirelessly up front, and Lucas Paquetá dictated play from midfield.

Substitute Endrick also made a significant impact after coming off the bench, injecting fresh energy during the closing stages.

The victory extends Brazil’s World Cup campaign, but the performance also highlighted areas that will require improvement as the knockout rounds intensify.

Japan, despite the defeat, earned widespread admiration for a disciplined display that came within moments of taking one of football’s biggest prizes to extra time.

Brazil will now await their Round of 16 opponents, knowing sterner tests lie ahead as they continue their pursuit of a sixth FIFA World Cup title.
