Colombia Overcome Uzbekistan To Go Top Of Group K
June 18 (THEWILL) — Colombia opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with an impressive 3–1 victory over debutants, Uzbekistan, in a lively Group K encounter at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
The match marked a historic occasion for Uzbekistan, who were playing in their first-ever World Cup fixture, but Colombia’s superior experience and attacking quality ultimately proved decisive.
Colombia controlled the first half and were rewarded five minutes before the interval. A slick passing move carved open the Uzbek defence, allowing Daniel Muñoz to finish clinically in the 40th minute for the opening goal.
Liverpool forward Luis Díaz was central to Colombia’s attacking rhythm, consistently stretching the opposition and creating opportunities with his movement and creativity.
Despite Colombia’s dominance, Uzbekistan responded with resilience after the break and produced a memorable moment on the hour mark. Abbosbek Fayzullaev rose highest to head home and score his country’s first-ever World Cup goal, sparking wild celebrations among the debutants.

The equaliser gave Uzbekistan confidence, and they nearly stunned Colombia moments later when Karimov rattled the crossbar with a thunderous effort.
However, Colombia quickly restored their advantage. In the 65th minute, Díaz found space and struck a tame effort that should have been comfortably handled, but a costly goalkeeping error allowed the ball to slip through and into the net.
Uzbekistan continued to battle but struggled to contain Colombia’s late pressure as fatigue began to show.
Deep into stoppage time, substitute Jáminton Campaz sealed the result, meeting a cross from Cucho Hernández with a well-placed header to put the outcome beyond doubt.
The win sends Colombia to the top of Group K after the opening round of matches, taking advantage of Portugal’s earlier draw with DR Congo and strengthening their position in the race for qualification to the knockout stages.
