Mexico Edge South Korea To Seal Knockout Spot As Romo Punishes Goalkeeping Blunder

June 19 (THEWILL) — Mexico became the first team to qualify for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara.

With Czechia and South Africa having played out a 1-1 draw earlier, the clash effectively became a battle for top spot in Group A.

The opening half offered little in terms of clear-cut opportunities as both sides approached the match cautiously. Mexico started strongly, but South Korea gradually settled and began controlling possession.

The decisive moment came just five minutes into the second half, and it arrived in dramatic fashion.

South Korea goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu raced off his line to claim a harmless looping ball but collided with his own defender before spilling possession in a costly error.

Luis Romo reacted quickest, calmly lifting the loose ball into an empty net to hand Mexico the lead.

South Korea responded by dominating possession, finishing with 58 percent of the ball, but struggled to convert control into meaningful chances.

Mexico’s defence stood firm under pressure. Goalkeeper Raúl Rangel produced a crucial save, while defender Johan Vásquez made a heroic block to preserve the advantage.

Despite sustained late pressure from the Koreans, Mexico held on to secure all three points.

The result confirms Mexico’s place in the round of 32 and guarantees top spot in Group A, ensuring they will remain on home soil for their knockout fixture.
