USA Close In On Knockout Stage With Comfortable Win Over Australia

June 20, (THEWILL) — The United States moved to the brink of qualification for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a commanding 2-0 victory over Australia in their Group D clash at Lumen Field in Seattle on Friday.

Both sides came into the encounter with maximum points from their opening matches, but it was the hosts who produced the stronger display to seize control of the group with six points from two games.

The Americans made a bright start despite the absence of injured captain Christian Pulisic, who missed the match with a calf problem.

The USA took the lead in the 11th minute through an unfortunate own goal by Australian defender Cameron Burgess.

Folarin Balogun broke free down the left and delivered a dangerous cross into the box, and with Ricardo Pepi waiting to pounce, Burgess inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

The goal handed the hosts early momentum, though Australia responded with brief spells of promise. Matthew Leckie came close to levelling the score with a curling effort that flashed narrowly wide.

The Americans, however, remained in control and doubled their advantage just before halftime. A free-kick routine found Sergiño Dest at the edge of the area, and his strike took a heavy deflection before looping into the path of Alex Freeman, who headed home from close range.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside but was awarded after a VAR review.

The USA dominated the first half, controlling possession and limiting Australia’s attacking opportunities.
Australia emerged with greater urgency after the break and made three substitutions in a bid to change the momentum.

The Socceroos pushed forward more aggressively and enjoyed improved possession in the attacking third, but clear chances remained limited.
Mauricio Pochettino responded with tactical changes, introducing Sebastian Berhalter, Joe Scally, and Austin Trusty to reinforce his side.

Despite sustained pressure from Australia in the second half, the United States remained defensively solid and managed the closing stages comfortably to preserve their clean sheet.

The victory continues an impressive start to the tournament for the hosts after their emphatic opening win over Paraguay, while Australia must now fight to keep their qualification hopes alive heading into their final group match.
