Lagos Govt Confirms Arrest Of Widow’s Father-In-Law Over Alleged Harassment

The Lagos State Government has confirmed the arrest of a man identified as the father-in-law of a 28-year-old widow, Tosin, over allegations of harassment, intimidation and attempted dispossession.

The case drew public attention on Tuesday after activist Harrison Gwamnishu posted a video on X showing the man padlocking the gate of a house in Ikorodu, allegedly locking Tosin and her two children outside.

In the footage, Gwamnishu claimed the incident happened at No. 8 Jumofak, Igbo Oluwo Estate, Koya Adeniran, Ikorodu. He said Tosin’s husband died on July 20, 2026, and less than 10 days later, members of his family moved into the home and ordered her to move herself and her sons into a single room.

“They already have their own houses. But now they want his property and have left two children behind,” Gwamnishu wrote. “Tosin is being threatened for speaking up.”

The activist further alleged that some of the deceased’s belongings had been shared among relatives, while plans were underway to sell his car. He said a petition would be submitted to the Lagos State Police Command and called on the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency to intervene.

“No widow should have to fight for shelter and her children’s inheritance days after losing her husband,” he added.

*DSVA Steps In, Police Arrest Suspect*

Responding on Tuesday, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency said it had contacted Tosin after the video went viral.

According to DSVA, the widow told officials she had faced threats to her life, physical assault and intimidation since her husband’s death. She also said the matter had been reported at Owutu Police Division.

“As part of our intervention, we engaged the investigating officers. Preliminary feedback confirms that the alleged perpetrator has been arrested and remains in custody while investigations continue,” the agency stated.

DSVA said the Lagos Government remains committed to ensuring the safety of Tosin and her children, and will work with the police and other stakeholders to ensure justice in line with the law.

The agency also urged the public to report cases of domestic violence through its official channels.

The incident has sparked renewed discussions on widow rights and the enforcement of the Lagos State Protection Against Domestic Violence Law.
