2027: Lagos APC spokesman predicts trouble for Peter Obi, Obidient Movement

Lagos State spokesman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Mogaji Seye Oladejo, has cast doubt on Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi’s chances in the 2027 general elections.

Oladejo suggested that the political enthusiasm surrounding Obi‘s 2023 campaign may be losing momentum.

He made the assessment in a statement dated October 19, 2026, titled, ‘2027: Peter Obi and the Expiration Date of Political Momentum’, in which he argued that Obi had yet to build a lasting political structure capable of translating his popularity into electoral success.

While acknowledging the widespread excitement generated by Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign, particularly among young Nigerians, the APC spokesman maintained that public enthusiasm alone was not enough to secure victory at the polls.

He argued that Obi’s major challenge ahead of 2027 would be transforming the support of the Obidient movement into a functional party organisation, effective grassroots mobilisation and a well-defined electoral strategy.

Oladejo also raised concerns about the stability of Obi’s political platform, suggesting that shifts in party affiliation and the absence of a firmly established political structure could weaken his chances in the next presidential election.

According to him, winning an election requires more than popular appeal, as political parties must have effective organisational structures, disciplined members and sustained engagement with voters across different communities.

The APC spokesman also questioned Obi’s reputation for transparency and accountability, focusing on his frequent use of the expression “go and verify” when defending his claims and policy positions.

He argued that political credibility should be established through records that can be independently verified, consistent positions and measurable results, rather than slogans or repeated assurances.

Oladejo further questioned whether the Obidient movement had developed the institutional strength required to maintain its influence beyond the 2023 election cycle.

He maintained that a political movement largely driven by public enthusiasm must develop enduring structures and a coherent policy agenda to convert its support base into electoral victories.

The comments come as political parties and potential presidential candidates begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, Oladejo’s claims about a possible decline in Obi’s popularity were presented as his assessment of the former presidential candidate’s political prospects. He did not cite independent opinion polls or other empirical data to establish whether support for Obi has declined.
