Flood submerges Ikola, Command bridges as Alimosho residents plead with Sanwo-Olu for urgent help

Residents of Alimosho, Lagos State’s largest council area, have appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for immediate intervention after heavy flooding submerged the Ikola and Command bridges following days of persistent rainfall.

The floodwaters, which rose sharply on Wednesday, overwhelmed the waterways, blocked major access routes, displaced several families, and brought commercial activities in the area to a standstill.

At the scene, residents were seen struggling through submerged streets. Some commuters held onto one another to cross the flooded bridges, while traders and transport operators counted losses as shops and motor parks were overrun by water.

‘We cannot continue like this’
The affected communities said the recurring flash floods have made daily movement unsafe, with Alimosho’s drainage systems often unable to cope with water from surrounding canals.

“We are begging Governor Sanwo-Olu to come to our rescue. Each time it rains heavily, we are trapped. Our children cannot go to school and our businesses cannot open,” an Ikola resident said.

The incident has also drawn widespread outrage on social media, with commuters and displaced families calling on the state government for urgent relief.

Ikorodu road users raise alarm too
In a related development, road users in Ikorodu have also decried flooding on major routes, urging Governor Sanwo-Olu to intervene swiftly after Wednesday’s downpour.

Government’s position
The Lagos State Government said it is scaling up deflooding projects in flood-prone areas, including Alimosho.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, noted that the Sanwo-Olu administration is executing drainage and culvert works to provide lasting solutions to flooding in the area.

As of press time, there was no confirmation that the governor had visited the Ikola and Command bridge flood sites.

No casualties were reported in the latest incident, but residents said property and livelihoods suffered significant damage.
