Historic Curaçao Frustrate Ecuador to Claim First-Ever World Cup Point
June 21 (THEWILL) — Curaçao earned a historic first point at the FIFA World Cup after holding Ecuador to a hard-fought 0-0 draw in a memorable group-stage encounter on Sunday.
Making their debut appearance at the global showpiece, the Caribbean nation produced a resilient defensive display to deny an Ecuador side that dominated virtually every statistical category.
Ecuador controlled 75 per cent of possession and fired 26 shots, including 15 on target, but were repeatedly frustrated by goalkeeper Eloy Room, whose outstanding performance kept Curaçao in the contest.
Room produced 13 saves during the match, delivering one of the most remarkable goalkeeping displays seen at the tournament so far.
Led by veteran striker Enner Valencia, Ecuador pushed relentlessly for a breakthrough and introduced several attacking substitutes in the second half in an effort to unlock the Curaçao defence.

However, the newcomers remained organised and disciplined despite coming under sustained pressure.
Curaçao collected five yellow cards as they battled to preserve the draw, but their determination ultimately paid off when the final whistle confirmed a landmark result for the island nation.
While Ecuador were left disappointed after failing to convert their dominance into victory, Curaçao celebrated a result that will be remembered as one of the greatest moments in the country’s football history.
