Messi Brace Sends Argentina Into World Cup Knockout Stage
Defending champions, Argentina, secured their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout rounds after a 2-0 victory over Austria in Group J at Dallas Stadium, Texas, on Monday.
Lionel Messi was the difference once again, scoring both goals as Argentina overcame an early setback to maintain their perfect start to the tournament.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner endured a frustrating opening when he missed a penalty in the ninth minute, but he responded in trademark fashion before halftime.
Messi capped a flowing team move in the 38th minute, arriving perfectly to meet Facundo Medina’s low cross and fire a first-time finish into the bottom corner.
Austria struggled to create meaningful opportunities after the break, with Marcel Sabitzer’s set-piece delivery providing one of their few moments of danger. Kevin Danso met the cross at the far post before Patrick Wimmer headed wide, but Argentina remained largely comfortable.
With Austria pushing forward late on, Messi delivered the final blow deep into stoppage time. After Julián Álvarez’s shot was saved, the Argentine captain reacted quickest to convert the rebound following an initial blocked effort, sealing the victory in the 95th minute.
The brace marked another milestone for the Argentine legend, taking his World Cup tally to a record 18 goals. Messi has now scored five times in just two matches at the tournament.
The result guarantees Argentina’s progression from Group J ahead of their final group-stage fixture against Jordan, while Austria’s hopes of advancing will now depend on results elsewhere.
