ADC faction accuses Atiku of treason, denounces G100 merger’s push

A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by Alhaji Nafiu Bala Gombe, has accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of treason and criminal impersonation, saying his actions are designed to ridicule Nigeria before the international community.

In a statement issued after an emergency joint session of the Board of Trustees and National Working Committee held on August 31, 2026, the ADC faction condemned the alleged unauthorized use of the party’s name, logo and symbols by Atiku.

The party said the use of its identity to project falsehoods and embarrass Nigeria globally “will not be tolerated,” describing such conduct as a betrayal of national pride and sovereignty.

The ADC specifically condemned the reported institution of legal proceedings against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in a foreign jurisdiction by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

“While we recognize every citizen’s right to legal recourse, grievances against a democratically elected President must be ventilated within Nigerian laws and institutions,” the statement said.

The party described dragging the office of the President to foreign courts as “an act of desperation, cowardice, and treachery,” and a direct affront to Nigeria’s national security and interest.

The BOT/NWC further warned Atiku to desist from parading himself as, or speaking for, the ADC presidential candidate. It said any attempt to drag the party into his personal political vendetta would attract legal and political consequences.

On the G100 Coalition agenda, the ADC said it is aware of sustained pressure and back-channel negotiations by certain elements within the coalition and Atiku to force the party into a merger or alliance ahead of 2027.

“Let it be placed on record: The African Democratic Congress is NOT, and will NOT be, in any alliance, merger, or coalition with any political party ahead of the 2027 elections,” the party declared.

The ADC said it remains “an independent, principle-driven and self-reliant party that will contest and win elections based on its ideology, structure, and the mandate of the Nigerian people. We will not be a ladder for political anarchists,” it added.

The statement charged ADC members, INEC, security agencies and the general public to take note of the resolutions. It was signed by the National Chairman, Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe.
