Fani-Kayode Arrives in South Africa, Pledges Stronger Ties

Nigeria’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Ambassador Femi Fani-Kayode, has arrived in Johannesburg to begin his diplomatic assignment, pledging to strengthen bilateral relations and safeguard the welfare of Nigerians residing in the country.

Fani-Kayode arrived at O. R. Tambo International Airport on Sunday, October 25, where officials of the Nigerian High Commission received him.

The envoy, who is also accredited to Lesotho and Eswatini, said his mission, under the mandate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, would prioritise renewed friendship, cooperation and mutual understanding between Nigeria and South Africa.

He emphasised the need for both countries to deepen their partnership, noting that closer collaboration between the two major African economies could promote trade, investment, regional stability and continental development.

His appointment comes amid concerns over tensions between Nigerians and South Africans, underscoring the importance of diplomatic engagement and sustained dialogue to address issues affecting relations between citizens of both countries.

Fani-Kayode is expected to work with relevant South African authorities to address concerns surrounding the safety and welfare of Nigerians while encouraging peaceful coexistence and respect for the rights of citizens of both nations.

The High Commissioner has also expressed commitment to Pan-Africanism, advocating greater unity among African countries to tackle shared challenges, advance economic prosperity and protect the dignity and interests of their people.

His agenda is expected to include strengthening political and diplomatic cooperation, expanding economic and cultural partnerships, and promoting people-to-people relations founded on mutual respect and shared interests.
