OPC Endorses Tinubu for 2027, Tells North: It’s payback time for Buhari support

The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) faction loyal to the late Dr Frederick Fasehun has formally endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in 2027 and urged the North to return the favour Tinubu extended to former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking on Saturday in Lagos at the group’s 32nd anniversary and the inauguration of its new National Executive Council, OPC Worldwide National President Otunba Wasiu Afolabi Idowu said the organisation would “queue behind” Tinubu again if the political climate allowed a free and fair contest.

Afolabi linked the endorsement to the late founder’s philosophy that any Yoruba occupant of the presidency was a collective Yoruba project. He noted that the OPC had contributed to Tinubu’s 2023 victory and would be ready to mobilise again in 2027.

He specifically appealed to northern voters: “The North especially should realise it is payback time for the backing Asiwaju gave to Muhammadu Buhari’s two tenures of eight years.” Supporting Tinubu, he argued, would allow the president to consolidate and complete the reforms his administration has started.

While endorsing Tinubu, Afolabi called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to remain strictly neutral and ensure every vote counts. He also urged federal and state governments and lawmakers to treat insecurity, unemployment and the rising cost of living as national emergencies, describing Nigeria as a country of vast potential currently held back by economic and security pressures.

Chairman of the OPC Board of Trustees and APC chieftain Hon. Wale Oshin presented the certificate of office to the new national leadership and charged them to promote unity, peace and progress among members at home and abroad, guided by the group’s constitution.

The endorsement from the Fasehun-aligned OPC adds another Yoruba socio-cultural voice to the early 2027 conversation and frames the contest in terms of regional reciprocity and continuity of reforms.
