Empowering Women, Transforming Communities: The Priscilla Otti Impact in Abia State

When women are empowered, families become stronger, communities grow, and economies prosper. This timeless truth is becoming increasingly evident in Abia State, where the wife of the Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, has emerged as a passionate advocate for women and the girl child.

Since becoming the First Lady of Abia State, Mrs. Otti has remained committed to improving the lives of women, especially those at the grassroots. Through her Safe Haven Care Foundation and other strategic partnerships, she has championed programmes that promote economic empowerment, education, healthcare, and social inclusion.

One of her major interventions has been the fight against human trafficking and the activities of baby factories in the state. Working closely with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Abia State Ministry of Women Affairs, she has supported the rescue, rehabilitation, training, resettlement, and empowerment of girls who were victims of trafficking, giving them a fresh start in life.

Recognising that economic empowerment is one of the most effective ways to reduce poverty, Mrs. Otti introduced the Ahiaoma Market Women Empowerment Programme through her foundation. The programme provides women with business support, entrepreneurial skills, financial literacy, and resources to start or expand their businesses. As a result, many women have become financially independent, improved their family incomes, and contributed to the growth of the state’s economy.

With the support of Governor Alex Otti, the First Lady also provided decent housing for vulnerable women by building, furnishing, and handing over three-bedroom bungalows to 25 indigent women across the 17 local government areas of the state. This remarkable initiative has restored dignity and hope to many families.

Mrs. Otti has also made education and mentorship for the girl child a top priority. Through various outreach programmes, she encourages young girls to stay in school, pursue their dreams, develop leadership skills, and believe in their ability to succeed regardless of their background.

Her commitment to women’s welfare also extends to healthcare. She has actively promoted maternal and child health, women’s health awareness, and access to quality healthcare services, especially for women in rural communities where medical care is often limited.

A key strength of Mrs. Otti’s approach is inclusiveness. She has continued to engage market women, farmers, artisans, professionals, and women leaders, ensuring that empowerment programmes reach those who need them most. By encouraging collaboration and participation, she has helped women become active partners in the development of their communities.

Her efforts have also inspired more women to take up leadership roles in their communities and in public service. Under Governor Alex Otti’s administration, women are increasingly contributing to decision-making, community development, and governance, reflecting a growing culture of inclusion and equal opportunity.
