Merino’s Late Strike Sends Spain Past Belgium Into World Cup Semi-Finals

July 11, (THEWILL) — Spain booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after substitute Mikel Merino scored a dramatic late winner to seal a 2-1 victory over Belgium in Los Angeles.

Merino emerged as Spain’s hero for the second consecutive knockout match, finding the decisive goal in the 88th minute to preserve La Roja’s unbeaten run and send them into a heavyweight semi-final against France.

Belgium suffered a major setback even before kickoff after captain Youri Tielemans was ruled out with an injury sustained during the warm-up.

The Red Devils’ problems worsened in the second half when goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was forced off injured, with Senne Lammens replacing him between the posts.

Spain controlled much of the early possession and deservedly took the lead in the first half through Fabián Ruiz.

The European side dominated midfield with Rodri, Pedri, and Dani Olmo dictating the tempo as Belgium struggled to establish any sustained rhythm.

Belgium, however, refused to fade and produced a spirited response after the break. Charles De Ketelaere brought his side level with a well-taken finish, giving the Red Devils renewed belief after their impressive Round of 16 victory over co-hosts the United States.

The contest remained delicately poised as both teams searched for a breakthrough.

Belgium came close to taking the lead when Alexis Saelemaekers surged forward on the counterattack, only for Aymeric Laporte to produce a crucial defensive intervention.

With extra time looming, Spain found the decisive moment.

Shortly after coming off the bench, Merino reacted quickest when substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens could only parry Pau Cubarsí’s low effort into his path.

The midfielder calmly converted from close range in the 88th minute, sparking wild celebrations among the Spanish players and supporters.

Spain successfully saw out the closing stages to secure a place in the last four, where they will face France in one of the tournament’s most eagerly anticipated semi-finals.

Belgium, meanwhile, bow out after another spirited World Cup campaign.

Despite injuries to key players and a resilient display against one of the tournament favourites, the Red Devils were unable to avoid elimination as what many regard as the nation’s “golden generation” fell just short once again on football’s biggest stage.
