Flamingos Defeat Benin To Qualify For 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup
July 12, (THEWILL) — Nigeria’s Flamingos have secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Benin 5-3 in the second leg of their qualifying tie on Saturday, completing an 8-5 aggregate victory.
Coach Akeem Busari’s side built on their 3-2 first-leg success in Ikenne with another attacking masterclass in Lomé to book their place at the global tournament in Morocco.
The Flamingos made a dream start, taking the lead in the sixth minute through Mary Dustan. However, Benin responded almost immediately, equalising just three minutes later to keep the contest finely balanced.
Nigeria quickly regained control as Ester Stephen restored the lead in the 15th minute before Queen Joseph doubled the advantage five minutes later to put the Flamingos 3-1 ahead.
Benin refused to surrender and mounted an impressive fightback, scoring twice to reduce the deficit and briefly raise hopes of overturning the aggregate scoreline.

But the Flamingos responded with composure, adding two more goals to wrap up a thrilling 5-3 victory and extinguish any hopes of a Beninese comeback.
The result confirmed an 8-5 aggregate triumph for Nigeria, underlining the team’s attacking quality after scoring eight goals across the two qualifying matches.
Speaking after the game, head coach Akeem Busari praised his players for their determination and attacking display.
“I’m proud of the players’ determination and attacking spirit. They showed resilience and deserved this qualification,” Busari said.
Nigeria will now turn their attention to the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, scheduled to take place in Rabat, Morocco, from October 17 to November 7, where the Flamingos will once again aim to challenge for global honours.
