Abia Assembly Advances Key Bills, Reviews Erosion Report, Schedules Legislative Retreat
The Abia State House of Assembly has continued deliberations on a number of critical legislative proposals aimed at strengthening governance, improving public welfare and addressing pressing environmental challenges across the state.
During plenary, lawmakers commenced the consideration of H.A.B. 34 of 2025: The Abia State Real Estate Landlords and Tenancy Bill in the Committee of the Whole. Following extensive deliberations, the House resolved to continue consideration of the bill on a future legislative date to allow for further scrutiny.
The House also considered the report of its Joint Committee on Environment and Works on the deplorable erosion sites affecting Obunta (Obukwu) and other autonomous communities in Ikwuano State Constituency. While reviewing the report in the Committee of the Whole, lawmakers directed the Clerks at the Table to abridge the lengthy recommendations contained in the report to facilitate easier consideration during subsequent proceedings.
In addition, the Assembly deferred further consideration of H.A.B. 28 of 2025: The Abia Market Safety and Protection Bill and H.A.B. 29 of 2025: The Abia State of Nigeria Poverty Alleviation Trust Bill. The two bills will return for deliberation on a future legislative date.
Speaking during the session, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ihuoma Emeruwa, informed members that the Assembly would participate in a legislative retreat scheduled for Thursday, July 16, 2026.
According to him, the retreat is designed to provide lawmakers with deeper insights into several important bills currently before the House and expected to be passed into law.
At the close of proceedings, the House adjourned plenary to reconvene on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., to continue its legislative business.
