Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” Earns Positive First Reactions from Critics
July 07, () — Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated epic “The Odyssey” has received widespread praise from critics following its world premiere in London on Monday, July 6.
The film, based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem, stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the legendary king of Ithaca, on his long journey home after the Trojan War.
The cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, and Elliot Page.
Universal Pictures held press-only screenings ahead of the film’s release, with critics praising Nolan’s latest work for its scale, visuals, and performances.
Fandango’s Erik Davis described the film as “an absolute triumph” and a “crowning cinematic achievement.” He also praised Nolan’s use of horror elements and highlighted Robert Pattinson’s performance.

Collider’s Perri Nemiroff called it “a filmmaking feast,” while Next Best Picture editor Matt Neglia described it as “a colossal achievement of scale” with some of Nolan’s most breathtaking action sequences.
Film journalist Simon Thompson praised the film’s “flawless filmmaking” and called Matt Damon’s performance as Odysseus one of his best.
Variety’s Jazz Tangcay described the film as “an astonishing achievement” and “a triumphant, spectacular epic.”
Not every review was completely positive. IndieWire critic David Ehrlich said the film had some flaws and did not rank among Nolan’s very best works, but added that its final act “rewards the journey.”
“The Odyssey” is Nolan’s first feature film to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras, using new technology developed in collaboration with IMAX.
The film reportedly has a production budget of $250 million, making it one of Nolan’s most expensive projects to date.
It follows his Oscar-winning “Oppenheimer” and marks Nolan’s first move into the mythological fantasy genre, as well as his first adaptation of an ancient epic poem for the big screen.
“The Odyssey” opens in cinemas worldwide on July 17.
