A bid to make fast money landed a former Lagos motorcyclist in NDLEA custody after he allegedly passed 100 wraps of methamphetamine at the airport.
Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency arrested the suspect at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, shortly after he arrived from Uganda. The operation was based on intelligence and days of surveillance, according to the agency.
The agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, said the man had worked as a commercial okada rider in Lagos for 15 years before he was allegedly lured into an international drug cartel. Investigators believe he swallowed 100 pellets of meth in Uganda and tried to smuggle them into Nigeria by ingesting them.
On arrival, NDLEA operatives placed him under watch. While in custody, he excreted all 100 wraps.
In a post on X on Sunday, the NDLEA described the attempt as a failed shortcut to wealth. “After 15 years of working as an okada rider in Lagos, this individual decides he needed to forcefully upgrade and change his social status by joining a transnational drug trafficking organisation,” the agency stated. “That dream has not only crumbled now but is ending in premium tears following his arrest at the Lagos airport by #ndlea_nigeria officers after excreting a whopping 100 wraps of methamphetamine he ingested in far away Uganda.”
The suspect is still being held by the NDLEA while investigations continue.
The agency said it is stepping up monitoring at all entry points, particularly routes used by drug syndicates, and called on Nigerians to report suspicious recruitment and travel offers.
