Abia APC Withdraws Suspension Threat Against Kalu, Nkwonta
The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has withdrawn its earlier threat to sanction former Governor of the state and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, as well as the member representing Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency, Chris Nkwonta, over alleged anti-party activities.
The decision was reached at a stakeholders’ meeting held on Sunday at the party’s new secretariat on Finbarrs Road, Umuahia, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum earlier issued to the two lawmakers.
The party had demanded public apologies from Kalu and Nkwonta over remarks allegedly interpreted as supporting the re-election bid of Governor Alex Otti in 2027.
However, rather than proceed with disciplinary measures after the expiration of the deadline, the APC leadership opted for reconciliation and unity.
Addressing stakeholders, the state chairman of the party, Hon. Chijioke Chukwu, said the leadership was determined to heal divisions and strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He acknowledged that recent party congresses and primaries had generated disagreements among members and accepted responsibility for any shortcomings of the leadership.
“If there is anybody that should be blamed, I take responsibility first before members of the State Working Committee,” Chukwu said.
He urged members to put past grievances behind them and channel future complaints through established party structures instead of taking them to the media.
Chukwu also explained that Kalu and Nkwonta had privately engaged the party leadership and clarified that their remarks were not intended to undermine the APC.
Consequently, stakeholders adopted a motion to bring the matter to a close. The motion was moved by the APC candidate for Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Uzor Azubuike, and seconded by Hon. Emmanuel Ndubisi, representing Bende South in the Abia State House of Assembly.
The resolution effectively ended the immediate threat of disciplinary action against the two lawmakers and other members involved in disagreements arising from previous party activities.
The party chairman, however, maintained that the decision would not prevent appropriate party organs from reviewing future breaches of the APC constitution and guidelines.
The development is part of renewed efforts by the Abia APC leadership to close ranks, reconcile aggrieved members and reposition the party for the 2027 general elections.
The stakeholders’ meeting also coincided with the celebration of Chukwu’s birthday.
