Obingwa General Hospital Goes Digital, Set for Commissioning, Tuesday
The Obingwa General Hospital, Mgboko, is set to enter a new era of healthcare delivery as the first retrofitted and digitally equipped secondary healthcare facility under the administration of Governor Alex Otti prepares for commissioning on Tuesday this week.
The hospital, which has undergone a complete transformation from its previously dilapidated state into a modern healthcare facility, is now equipped with cutting-edge medical technology, digital systems, modern beds, a world-class theatre and solar-powered electricity, among other facilities designed to deliver comprehensive healthcare services to the people.
The Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, announced the readiness of the facility during an inspection visit on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
Professor Uche said the transformation of the hospital represents another major step in Abia State’s gradual transition from an analogue healthcare system to a technology-driven and digitally enabled healthcare system.
He explained that the hospital has been fitted with advanced digital equipment capable of checking patients’ vital signs and supporting other medical procedures seamlessly.
“In fact, one of the equipment that we have here is AI enabled. So all these things are to ensure that we can leverage technology to expand coverage.
“We have a digital stadiometer, it does a lot of things. Instead of using the manual equipment to measure your blood pressure, your heart rate, your weight and height, this one, you just stand on it and it measures your height, your weight, and then there is a hand that you can use to get your blood pressure, your pulse, everything.
“And then it will calculate your BMI.
“So all your vital parameters at a glance, you get it.
“And because it is already linked to cloud, our digital archive to transfer all those information and save it.
“So that is what we are doing.
“And in fact, beyond that, when it registers something that is designed like the blood pressure, you will even tell it.
“And that is what His Excellency is doing. It is not just building the robust, future-ready healthcare. It is also customising it and making it people-friendly, making it contextually appropriate, so that our people will be able to embrace it, use it for their benefit,“ Prof. Uche stated.
The Health Commissioner said the remodelling of the Obingwa General Hospital is in line with Governor Otti’s broader vision of ensuring that every Abian, irrespective of whether they live in urban, suburban or rural communities, has access to quality healthcare services.
He recalled the poor condition of the facility before the intervention of the present administration, describing how the hospital had become dysfunctional, with leaking roofs and an environment that had become a habitation for rodents and reptiles.
According to him, “Because the hospital couldn’t really offer decent health care services to people.
“But, rather than knocking down, His Excellency approved the complete remodelling.
“So what was here before has been remodelled to a modern, and I dare say an ultra modern health care system.
“So I think Abians should be proud of what His Excellency is doing“
Professor Uche expressed satisfaction with the level of facilities now available at the hospital, noting that the government has provided quality equipment and adequate healthcare personnel to ensure effective service delivery.
“The facilities for that are here.
“We also have facilities for radiology, facilities for the opportunity, and then of course modern beds and all the basic facilities you need to have in a modern general hospital.
“So we’re happy that we can say that we’re meeting the standards that His Excellency has set,“ Prof. Uche stated.
Also speaking during the inspection, the Chief Executive Officer of the Hospitals Management Board, Dr Odochi Azubuike, said Governor Otti’s administration is systematically fixing the entire healthcare ecosystem in Abia State.
She explained that secondary healthcare occupies a critical position between primary and tertiary healthcare services, with general hospitals, cottage hospitals, clinics, dental clinics and eye clinics forming part of the system.
Dr Azubuike said the Obingwa General Hospital would offer a wider range of services beyond what is obtainable at the primary healthcare level, including emergency and comprehensive healthcare services.
“So at the level of secondary healthcare facilities, we talk about the general hospitals, cottage hospitals, clinics, dental clinics, and eye clinics.
“We have the eye clinic here. We’re going to have a dental clinic here.
“We’re going to have laboratories where we have the state of the art modern laboratory, where we have auto analysers and chemical analysers to analyse our blood samples and these are the things you don’t have in primary healthcare facilities.
“So we’re going to offer, in other words, comprehensive healthcare and emergency services.
“And the governor is a trailblazer by doing that because he understands the healthcare system,” Dr. Azubuike stated.
The fully transformed Obingwa General Hospital, Mgboko, is expected to serve as a major secondary healthcare hub for communities in the area, while primary healthcare centres within its catchment area will be linked to the facility for referrals and more advanced medical attention.
With its digital beds, modern diagnostic equipment, world-class theatre, advanced laboratory facilities and solar-powered electricity, the hospital stands as a striking example of the Otti administration’s drive to build a robust, people-friendly and future-ready healthcare system across Abia State.
As the facility awaits commissioning on Tuesday, residents of Obingwa and surrounding communities are set to witness the opening of a hospital that has risen from years of dysfunction and decay to become a modern centre 
positioned to redefine access to quality secondary healthcare.
