2,000 Homes Target at Risk as Lagos Threatens to Fire Slow Builders
The Lagos State Government has put contractors on notice over state housing projects, warning that slow performance will lead to contract revocation.
Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, gave the warning on Wednesday while inspecting the Abraham Adesanya Extension Joint Venture site and Sangotedo Housing Scheme Phase 2.
He said the state is working toward delivering a minimum of 2,000 housing units before the end of 2026.
Akinderu-Fatai, who toured the sites with Permanent Secretary Hafis Toriola, directors and engineers from the ministry, expressed concern over the slow pace at some locations.
“We are not satisfied with progress on ground. We also spotted technical issues that will be sorted out with the contractors,” he told reporters.
“If contractors have received enough funds and are still dragging their feet, we will take them off the project immediately,” he added.
The tour focused on a wider plan to deliver roughly 2,000 homes across several schemes. That includes the 526-unit Sangotedo development, being executed under a Public-Private Partnership arrangement.
The commissioner said the government is losing patience with the delays. He noted the projects were originally due for completion two years ago.
He attributed the setbacks to economic pressures, especially the sharp rise in construction material prices. The spike, he said, forced developers back to the ministry to renegotiate terms.
But according to him, the period for justifications has ended.
“We have moved beyond excuses. The focus now is on actual delivery,” he said.
He disclosed that the ministry will meet urgently with all remaining contractors to clear outstanding issues and get the projects back on schedule.
