August 17, () — Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, congratulated Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election, urging him to focus on delivering on the mandate voters gave him.
In a statement obtained by on Monday, August 17, 2026, Abbas described the election outcome as an indication that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remained committed to democratic principles and the electoral process.
The Speaker said the election gave political parties a chance to test their popularity with voters, arguing that the process reflected an environment where competing parties could participate in elections.
“The outcome of the election is evidence of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to democratic principles,” Abbas said.
He urged Adeleke to justify his renewed mandate by prioritising governance and delivering what he described as the dividends of democracy to Osun State residents.
The Speaker also commended the other candidates who contested the election, saying their participation contributed to Nigeria’s democratic development.
Abbas’s comments come after the Osun governorship election, in which Adeleke secured a second term in office. His victory extends his tenure as governor of the South-West state, and places renewed expectations on his administration to address residents’ priorities during his next term.
The Speaker’s statement did not provide details of specific areas in which the governor should focus his attention or set out measures for assessing the performance of the administration.
Adeleke’s re-election also means the state’s political leadership will remain under the control of the governor’s party for another term, subject to the formal conclusion of the electoral process and any legal challenges arising from the election.
Abbas said the participation of all the candidates was important to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions, stressing that electoral competition remained a key component of the country’s political development.
