Abia State has secured a major place in the Federal Government’s latest infrastructure investment drive following President Bola Tinubu’s approval of a ₦19.70 billion greenfield trailer park project at Aro-Ngwa in the state.
The project forms part of a wider package of road developments, highway concessions and transport infrastructure initiatives valued at more than ₦438 billion, approved during the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, disclosed the approvals after the meeting, outlining a series of projects spread across several states, including Abia, Rivers, Ogun, Ekiti, Niger, Lagos and others.
For Abia, the proposed Aro-Ngwa trailer park represents a potentially strategic intervention in the state’s growing transport, industrial and commercial landscape. Situated within the Aba economic corridor, the development is expected to provide a more organised facility for heavy-duty vehicles, improve traffic management and support the movement of goods into and out of one of Nigeria’s most important commercial centres.
The investment comes at a time when Abia is experiencing renewed attention in infrastructure, manufacturing, trade and industrial development. With Aba serving as a major hub for indigenous manufacturing and commerce, improved logistics infrastructure could further strengthen the movement of raw materials and finished products while reducing the pressure created by indiscriminate parking of trailers and heavy-duty trucks along major routes.
The Aro-Ngwa project was approved as part of the Federal Government’s highway and trailer park concessions under a public-private partnership arrangement, signalling an effort to bring private-sector participation into the development and management of critical transport infrastructure.
Other projects approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) include the reconstruction of the Ado-Ekiti–Iyin–Aramoko–Itawure–Osun border road at ₦159.83 billion, rehabilitation works on the Abeokuta–Iboro–Ilaro Road in Ogun State valued at ₦54.12 billion, and the reconstruction of a major section of the East-West Road between Port Harcourt, Eleme Junction and Onne Port Junction in Rivers State at ₦74.51 billion.
The council also approved ₦54.52 billion for the second phase of rehabilitation works on the Ado-Ekiti–Afe Babalola University Road, as well as ₦94.24 billion for the construction of the Ilara–Iselu Road in Ogun State.
Under the concession arrangements, ₦56.75 billion was approved for the development of the Dikko–Maje section of the Suleja–Minna Road in Niger State, while ₦96.43 billion was earmarked for the operation and maintenance of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
Beyond road infrastructure, the Federal Executive Council also considered major interventions in education and healthcare, including plans connected to the funding of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund and significant health infrastructure projects.
For Abia, however, the ₦19.70 billion Aro-Ngwa trailer park approval stands out as a fresh federal infrastructure commitment with the potential to complement the state’s expanding economic ambitions.
As Aba continues to strengthen its position as a centre of manufacturing, trade and enterprise, the development of a modern trailer park could become an important piece of the logistics network required to support the next phase of Abia’s economic growth.
