From Strength to Success: Aba South Mayor’s Wife, Akudo Anyanwu, Ignites New Vision for Women’s Empowerment and Prosperity at August Women Meeting
The 2026 August Meeting in Aba South became a powerful celebration of the strength, resilience and economic potential of Abia women, with the Wife of the Mayor of Aba South Local Government Area, Mrs. Akudo Precious Anyanwu, taking centre stage in a passionate call for greater investment in the skills, knowledge and opportunities that can transform the lives of women and, by extension, entire communities.
Mrs. Anyanwu described the empowerment of women as a critical foundation for building stronger families, more prosperous communities and a more economically vibrant Abia State. She maintained that the modern Abia woman is not merely a participant in society but a driving force whose contributions can be seen across markets, businesses, homes, industries and communities.
According to her, women across the state have continued to distinguish themselves as traders, entrepreneurs, caregivers, builders and leaders, demonstrating remarkable resilience even in the face of economic and social challenges. She stressed that the next phase of progress must focus on equipping women with the practical tools required to move from simply surviving to truly thriving.
For Mrs. Anyanwu, a thriving woman represents far more than an economically comfortable individual. She is a woman empowered to lead, provide for her family, build sustainable businesses, create opportunities for others and contribute meaningfully to the development of her community.
She therefore placed strong emphasis on skills acquisition and knowledge development, identifying business management, technology, agriculture and financial management as key areas in which women must be equipped to compete and succeed in an evolving economy.
Her message resonated strongly with the theme of the 2026 August Meeting, Women of Abia, Empowered to Thrive, which brought together women and political leaders for a renewed conversation about the place of women in the development agenda of the state.
Mrs. Anyanwu commended Governor Alex Otti and Wife, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, for their support and commitment towards programmes aimed at improving the welfare and economic prospects of women. She noted that the impact of empowering a woman goes far beyond the individual, as it strengthens households, improves the welfare of children and creates a ripple effect throughout the wider community.
The event also featured a strong message from the Wife of the Governor Mrs. Priscilla Otti, who highlighted the importance of infrastructure in unlocking the economic potential of women. She explained that quality roads and a functional economic environment are essential to helping women reduce business costs, move goods more easily and expand their sources of livelihood.
Represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Maureen Aghukwa, the Governor’s wife acknowledged the enormous contributions of women to the growing Abia economy, particularly in leather and fashion, trade, agriculture, entrepreneurship and manufacturing.
She noted that while Abia women possess the determination and creativity to succeed, their efforts can achieve even greater results when government creates an environment where businesses can operate efficiently and profitably.
The ongoing reconstruction of major roads across the state was identified as a major part of this broader economic vision. In Aba, the transformation of Port Harcourt Road, Ohanku Road, Crystal Park Road and other strategic routes is expected to improve movement, reduce transportation difficulties and restore commercial activities in areas that had suffered years of infrastructural neglect.
Mrs. Otti also drew attention to the interventions of her office through the Safe Tent Care Initiative, particularly the Ahiaoma Women Economic Empowerment Programme, which provides grants and other forms of support to women operating small businesses.
She encouraged women to remain resilient, embrace available opportunities and continue playing their vital role in the growth of their families, communities and the state.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Aba South Local Government Area, Hon. Obialor Denis Anyanwu, applauded Governor Alex Otti for policies and programmes designed to improve the welfare and economic opportunities available to women. He urged the women of Aba South to continue supporting the present administration to enable its development agenda to remain on course.
The August Meeting attracted prominent political leaders and stakeholders, including the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ihuoma Emeruwa; the member representing Aba Central State Constituency, Hon. Stephen Akachukwu Ucheonye; the Mayor of Aba North LGA, Hon. Timothy Kalu Iheke; the Deputy Mayor of Aba South, Hon. Martins Azubuike; and the Leader of Aba South Legislative Council, Rt. Hon. Paul Nwandu.
Members of the Aba South Legislative Council, Supervisors, the Labour Party Chairman of Aba South, the Coordinator of Abia Arise for Aba South, wives of Mayors from Aba North, Obingwa, Ugwunagbo and Ohafia Local Government Areas, as well as other stakeholders, were also in attendance.
For Mrs. Akudo Precious Anyanwu, however, the message of the gathering remained clear: the future of families and communities becomes stronger when women are given the capacity, confidence and opportunities to succeed. Her call at the Aba South August Meeting has therefore added fresh momentum to the growing campaign for women who are not only empowered to earn but equipped to lead, build, innovate and thrive.
