King Charles, Queen Camilla Won’t Move Into Buckingham Palace After Renovation
June 26 () — King Charles III and Queen Camilla will not move into Buckingham Palace after its multi-year renovation is completed.
The decision was announced alongside the annual Sovereign Grant Report released on June 25, 2026.
The palace confirmed the King and Queen will continue living at Clarence House in London.
Buckingham Palace is undergoing a major £369 million (about $487 million) renovation project that began in 2017 and is expected to end in 2027. The work includes upgrading old electrical systems, plumbing, and heating, as well as other infrastructure that dates back several decades.
Palace officials said Buckingham Palace will still be used for official events, meetings, and royal ceremonies. It will also be opened more to the public once the work is completed.
The report also stated that King Charles has paid more than £30 million in taxes since becoming monarch.
Officials described the disclosure as part of a broader effort toward transparency.
Buckingham Palace, built in the 1820s, has served as the official London residence of British monarchs since Queen Victoria.
While it remains one of the most recognised royal buildings in the world, it will now mainly serve as a working palace rather than a private home for the King.
