Abia CP Urges Retired Police Officers to Use Institutional Channels on Security Matters
The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, psc(+), mnips, JP, has urged retired police officers to channel concerns on sensitive national security matters through established institutional platforms before resorting to public commentary.
Afolabi gave the charge on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, when he received a delegation of the Police Retired Officers Forum of Nigeria, Abia State Chapter, led by its National Secretary, Dr. Enyi Ignatius, during a courtesy visit to the Command Headquarters.
The delegation had visited to welcome and congratulate the Commissioner on his assumption of duty and pledged its support for the Command’s efforts to prevent and combat crime in the state. The retired officers also offered to make their wealth of experience and resources available to the Command whenever required.
Responding, Afolabi appreciated the delegation for its continued commitment to supporting the police and said his administration would focus on implementing the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, including the training and retraining of personnel to promote professionalism and intelligence-led policing.
The Commissioner acknowledged some operational challenges facing the Command, including communication limitations affecting areas outside Umuahia.
He also highlighted the need to strengthen the Cybercrime Department to improve the Command’s response to cyber-related offences in the state.
Afolabi, thereafter, conveyed the directive of the Inspector-General of Police on responsible public commentary, particularly by retired police officers.
He advised them to utilise established institutional channels to communicate concerns relating to sensitive national security issues before making public statements.
He warned that unverified comments, especially during media engagements, could undermine ongoing security operations and erode public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to professionalism, effective policing and collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the fight against crime across Abia State.
