DreamWorks, Universal Announce ‘Donkey’ Movie Coming in 2028

June 26 () — Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have announced a new standalone film, “Donkey,” a spin-off from the “Shrek” franchise, set for release on June 30, 2028.

The film will tell the origin story of Donkey and how he became the character first introduced in the original “Shrek” film.

Eddie Murphy will return to voice Donkey. The character has appeared in all main “Shrek” films and remains one of the franchise’s most popular figures.

The movie will be directed by Charlie Bean, known for “The Lego Ninjago Movie” and the live-action “The Lady and the Tramp.” It will be co-directed by Matt Flynn, with Rebecca Huntley producing.

The announcement comes ahead of “Shrek 5,” scheduled for release in June 2027.

The film will reunite Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy, with Zendaya joining the cast.

The “Shrek” franchise began in 2001 and has grown into one of DreamWorks Animation’s most successful film series worldwide, with multiple sequels and spin-offs.
