Abia Moves to Safeguard Sports Development as Government Unveils Plans to Renovate Umuahia Township Stadium, Establish Sports Development Zone
The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the sports sector and creating a sustainable framework for athlete development with the announcement of plans to renovate the Umuahia Township Stadium pending the commencement of the proposed Umuahia Stadium City Project.
The ambitious move, which is aimed at ensuring that sporting activities across the state continue uninterrupted, was disclosed by the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Nwadinma Ananaba, during a strategic engagement with chairmen and secretaries of the 35 sports associations in Abia State.
The meeting, held at the Bishop Nwaedo Banquet Hall along BCA Road, Umuahia, brought together key stakeholders in the sports sector to deliberate on strategies for advancing sports development and aligning association activities with the vision of the present administration.
Addressing participants during the interactive session, Sir Ananaba revealed that the state government had concluded plans to renovate the Umuahia Township Stadium to serve as an alternative sporting hub while preparations continue for the highly anticipated Umuahia Stadium City Project, which is expected to be flagged off before the end of the year.
The Commissioner further disclosed that the government is exploring the establishment of a Sports Development Zone, a groundbreaking initiative designed to attract investors and manufacturers into the sports industry.
According to him, the proposed zone will operate as a tax-free environment where sports kits, equipment and other sporting materials can be manufactured locally.
He explained that the initiative would not only deepen sports development but also stimulate industrial growth, create employment opportunities for youths and position Abia as a major player in Nigeria’s sports economy.
In another significant development, Sir Ananaba announced that a bill intended to strengthen sports funding in the state is currently under consideration. He expressed optimism that the legislation, once passed into law, would provide a more sustainable and reliable funding structure for sporting activities and help address the long-standing challenge of inadequate financing confronting many sports associations.
The Commissioner assured the various associations of government support and encouraged them to intensify grassroots sports development programmes. He urged stakeholders to focus on discovering and nurturing young talents across communities while also seeking sponsorship partnerships to complement government interventions.
He stressed that unity and cooperation among the associations would be critical to achieving meaningful progress in the sector and ensuring that Abia becomes a leading sports destination in the country.
“All the associations must be united to ensure the accomplishment of government goals in sports development,” he stated.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, Pastor Jane Maxwell Igwe, commended the chairmen and secretaries for accepting the responsibility of leading their respective associations.
She encouraged them to make the most of the engagement by participating in meaningful discussions, setting measurable targets and developing realistic strategies capable of driving growth in their various sporting disciplines.
Drawing inspiration from biblical teachings, Pastor Igwe emphasized the importance of planning and preparation, reminding participants that even Jesus Christ taught the principle of counting the cost before embarking on any project.
Also speaking, the Director of Sports, Comrade George Obioma, highlighted the enormous responsibilities placed on sports associations and urged both chairmen and secretaries to discharge their duties with dedication, professionalism and commitment.
He particularly challenged the secretaries to remain proactive and efficient in carrying out administrative responsibilities, describing them as critical to the success and sustainability of their associations.
The meeting also served as a platform for the various association leaders to present their developmental roadmaps and strategic plans to the Commissioner.
In a notable presentation, Comrade Obioma informed participants that the Abia State Basketball Association had commenced the construction of a hostel within the Umuahia Township Stadium complex. The facility, he explained, is intended to provide accommodation for athletes during training camps and competitions.
He commended the association for the initiative and subsequently invited its chairman, Mr Victor Ifeanyi Okoro, to present the association’s development blueprint.
Presenting the roadmap, Mr Okoro outlined a comprehensive vision centered on grassroots basketball development, increased female participation, talent discovery initiatives and the provision of modern training and competition facilities across the state.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Abia State Badminton Association, Mr Abel Sunday, highlighted the association’s impressive achievements, including the successful hosting of two international badminton competitions in the previous year.
He disclosed that the association has set ambitious targets aimed at positioning Abia as a badminton powerhouse by 2030, with plans to develop 5,000 badminton players, 500 para-badminton athletes and 100 qualified coaches across the state.
The Chairman of the Powerlifting Association, Mr John Nwosu, also shared encouraging developments from his association. He revealed that Esther Nwogu and Onyinyechi Mark are currently in the national camp preparing for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, attributing their progress to the association’s sustained commitment to athlete development and training.
Mr Nwosu further announced plans to host an Open Powerlifting Championship in August, a competition expected to attract athletes from within and outside the state.
The meeting ended on a highly optimistic note, with stakeholders describing the engagement as a significant milestone in strengthening sports administration and fostering greater collaboration among sports associations in Abia State.
Participants expressed confidence that the initiatives unveiled by the state government, coupled with the strategic plans presented by the associations, would usher in a new era of sports excellence, talent development and economic opportunities for the people of Abia.
The interactive session ultimately reinforced the administration’s determination to provide an enabling environment for sports to flourish while encouraging associations to take greater ownership of the development and success of their respective disciplines, thereby laying a solid foundatio
n for sustainable sports growth across the state.
