Gov. Otti Hails Nigerian Broadcasters, Reaffirms Media’s Vital Role in Strengthening Democracy and National Development
The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has applauded the national leadership of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB) for its unwavering commitment to promoting professionalism, ethical journalism, and excellence in Nigeria’s broadcasting industry, describing the body as a driving force behind the advancement of responsible media practice and national development.
Governor Otti gave the commendation while declaring open the 2026 Annual Conference of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB), Abia State Chapter, held at the Women Development Centre, Umuahia. Represented by his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, the Governor praised the leadership of the association under its National President, Professor Umar Pate, for strengthening the collective voice of broadcasters across the country and inspiring a new generation of media professionals to embrace broadcasting as a powerful instrument for social cohesion, democratic consolidation, and sustainable national progress.
He noted that the conference theme, “Broadcasting Beyond the Signal: Community Impact in the Digital Era,” aptly reflects the realities of a rapidly evolving communication landscape where technological innovation continues to redefine how information is produced, disseminated, and consumed.
According to the Governor, broadcasting has evolved far beyond the traditional confines of radio and television, expanding into digital platforms, social media ecosystems, podcasts, streaming services, and other emerging channels that now dominate public communication.
He observed that in today’s digital environment, the true value of broadcasting is no longer measured by the size of its audience or geographical reach but by its ability to positively transform communities, empower citizens through credible information, foster accountability, promote social inclusion, and contribute meaningfully to sustainable development.
Governor Otti stressed that broadcasters now carry an even greater responsibility as society grapples with the growing menace of misinformation and disinformation. He maintained that professional broadcasters remain the trusted custodians of truth, factual reporting, and ethical journalism, adding that the quality and credibility of information disseminated by the media significantly influence democratic institutions, community unity, and the education of future generations.
He further emphasized that broadcasters play multiple roles beyond news reporting, serving as educators, community mobilizers, cultural ambassadors, and agents of social transformation. Through responsible journalism, he said, media professionals shape public opinion, amplify marginalized voices, preserve cultural heritage, and strengthen the relationship between government and citizens.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and open governance, Governor Otti described the media as an indispensable partner in governance and development. He noted that an informed citizenry remains the foundation of a prosperous and progressive society, stressing that responsible broadcasting is central to achieving that objective.
The Governor urged participants at the conference to engage in robust discussions that would produce innovative ideas capable of repositioning the broadcasting profession in the face of technological advancement and changing audience expectations. He encouraged broadcasters to adopt strategies that strengthen public confidence, promote media literacy, uphold ethical standards, and maximize digital technologies for the benefit of society.
He also reminded media practitioners that despite the rapid advancement of technology, the human element of broadcasting must never be overlooked. Beyond digital platforms, algorithms, and transmission signals, he said, are individuals and communities whose lives can be positively impacted through factual reporting, inspiring storytelling, and responsible journalism.
Expressing optimism over the outcome of the conference, Governor Otti said he was confident that the gathering would produce practical recommendations capable of advancing the broadcasting profession while reinforcing its strategic role in Nigeria’s development. He congratulated the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters, Abia State Chapter, the conference organizers, and all participants for successfully hosting the event before formally declaring the conference open.
Delivering the keynote lecture, the Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Abia State University, Uturu, Professor Innocent Ihechu, challenged broadcasters to make accuracy, thorough research, and credibility the bedrock of their professional practice.
He observed that while technological advancement has democratized access to information, technology alone does not define professionalism in broadcasting. Rather, he maintained that credibility remains the distinguishing factor that separates genuine broadcasters from content creators.
Professor Ihechu warned that the increasing spread of manipulated content and misinformation continues to erode public confidence in the media, urging broadcasters to remain committed to diligent research, factual reporting, and ethical journalism in order to preserve their relevance and public trust in an era of digital disruption.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Chairman of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters, Abia State Chapter, Comrade Chinezerem Agbakuru, called on broadcasters to remain steadfast in promoting ethical journalism, factual reporting, and community development despite the ever-changing media environment.
She emphasized that broadcasters have a responsibility not only to inform the public but also to shape society positively through credible, balanced, and verified reports. She noted that at a time when sensationalism increasingly competes for public attention across digital platforms, professionalism, accuracy, and the public interest must remain the guiding principles of the profession.
Agbakuru explained that the conference theme was carefully chosen to reinforce broadcasting’s role as a catalyst for grassroots development, particularly in rural communities where access to reliable information remains critical.
Also speaking during the conference, the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Danladi Isah, Director of Engineering Services, Engr. Okezie Nkpa, Abia State Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Mrs. Onyinye Ralph-Nwachukwu, and Station Manager of Flo FM, Sampson Eze, among other resource persons, sensitized participants on workplace safety and professional best practices.
They urged broadcasters to pay greater attention to studio ventilation, reduce prolonged exposure to broadcasting equipment, and maintain healthy working environments to minimize long-term occupational health risks.
The speakers equally encouraged media practitioners to uphold neutrality, excellence, professionalism, and accuracy in content production while embracing continuous learning and adapting to emerging broadcasting technologies to remain competitive in the industry.
Speaking on the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence, Engr. Emeka Nwogu encouraged broadcasters to acquire practical knowledge of AI-driven content creation tools and continually update their professional skills to remain relevant in the fast-changing digital media ecosystem.
At the conclusion of the conference, participants adopted a communiqué advocating stronger measures to improve broadcaster safety, promote professionalism, and deepen ethical standards across the industry. The Society of Nigerian Broadcasters, Abia State Chapter, also reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare, continuous capacity building, and professional development of broadcasters in the state.
The event climaxed with the formal induction of new members into the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters, marking the beginning of their journey toward professional excellence, lifelong learning, and greater contributions to
the advancement of broadcasting in Nigeria.
