June 19 () — President Bola Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, moving his retirement date to February 2027.

The extension, according to a State House statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, takes effect immediately. It follows an earlier extension that was due to expire on August 1, 2026.

Onanuga said the decision is aimed at enabling the Customs boss to consolidate ongoing reforms, particularly the implementation of the National Single Window project, which is designed to streamline trade processes, improve revenue generation, and enhance efficiency across Nigeria’s import and export value chain.

It also stated that the extension will ensure an orderly succession process within the Nigeria Customs Service and strengthen institutional stability during the transition period.

During the six-month extension period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs.

He is also mandated to supervise the compulsory retirement of officers who have reached 60 years of age or have served 35 years in the service, in line with public service regulations.

Adeniyi’s career in the Nigeria Customs Service spans over three decades. He joined the service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s and rose steadily through the ranks.

He was appointed Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023 before his appointment as Comptroller-General by President Tinubu in June 2023.

The Presidency said the extension reflects confidence in Adeniyi’s leadership and his role in advancing key reforms in the Customs Service, particularly in modernising operations and strengthening trade facilitation systems.
