The commitment of the Abia State Government to strengthening public safety and emergency response infrastructure has received another significant boost as plans are underway to establish a functional fire station within the Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu..
The proposed project, which is expected to enhance the institution’s capacity to respond swiftly to fire outbreaks and other emergencies, was unveiled during a strategic courtesy visit by officials of the Abia State Homeland Security, Fire and Medical Emergencies Agency to the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo.
Receiving the delegation, Professor Okeudo described the initiative as a welcome development and a critical intervention for the institution, especially considering the fire incidents the University has experienced in the past. He expressed appreciation to the Abia State Government for extending its safety and emergency management agenda to the institution, noting that the project would help protect lives, property, and academic facilities within the University environment.
Leading the delegation, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Homeland Security, Fire and Medical Emergencies, Hon. Chukwunenye Nwaogu Alajemba, explained that the visit formed part of ongoing efforts to build a collaborative framework with the University towards the establishment of the fire station and the strengthening of emergency response services across the campus community.
According to him, the proposed facility is designed to provide rapid intervention during emergencies, reduce response time, and ensure that students, staff, and residents within the University community enjoy improved safety and protection.
As part of the visit, the team conducted an on-the-spot assessment of potential sites earmarked for the construction of the fire station, signaling the government’s determination to move the project from planning to implementation.
The proposed fire station is expected to become a critical component of the state’s broader emergency management strategy, further demonstrating the administration’s resolve to safeguard lives and public institutions through proactive security and disaster-response measures.
With the planned facility, ABSU is poised to join the growing list of institutions benefiting from the Abia State Government’s drive to build a safer, more resilient, and emergency-
