Tinubu Heads To UNGA Amid Campaign To Scuttle Possible Trump Meeting

August 5, () — President Bola Tinubu is set to attend the 2026 United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York next month amid growing diplomatic intrigue, following revelations that he will be seated close to United States President Donald Trump during the General Debate, even as a Washington-based lobbying firm has mounted a campaign to stop any proposed meeting between the two leaders.

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, disclosed the development earlier in July after a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to Ibrahim, the Nigerian leader will occupy a front-row seat “very close” to President Trump during the annual gathering of world leaders.

While declining to confirm whether a bilateral meeting had been scheduled between Tinubu and Trump, the envoy maintained that the seating arrangement had already been secured.

“Well, I won’t be able to tell you that, but I can tell you clearly that President Tinubu will be sitting very close to Donald Trump in the front row of the United Nations General Assembly. Don’t ask me how that was arranged, but he will be sitting,” Ibrahim said.

His remarks come amid heightened public interest over whether the UN gathering could provide the first face-to-face engagement between Tinubu and Trump since the latter returned to the White House.

Ibrahim said President Tinubu intends to use the UN platform to present the achievements recorded by his administration over the past three years, particularly in economic reforms, governance, and regional stability.

He added that the President reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening security cooperation with the United Nations through enhanced border policing across West Africa to tackle terrorism, arms smuggling, human trafficking, and other cross-border crimes.

According to the ambassador, Tinubu believes stronger regional border management is critical to lasting peace and security within the sub-region.

“The President reiterated his commitment to border policing. This time around, the President will be working with the United Nations to look into the West African border.

“A lot of peacekeeping effort is coming in here. I can assure you the President is going to put a lot of effort into border policing for West African countries,” Ibrahim stated.

US Lobbying Firm Seeks To Block Meeting

However, the prospect of a Tinubu-Trump meeting has drawn swift opposition from a United States-based lobbying firm, Von Batten-Montague-York L.C.

In a statement posted on its X account, the Washington-based organisation said it had already forwarded a video of Ambassador Ibrahim’s comments to senior officials in the Trump administration.

The firm added that it would also circulate the material to members of the United States Congress and officials of the US State Department as part of efforts to discourage any formal engagement between the two presidents during the UN General Assembly.

According to the organisation, such a meeting could be interpreted by many Nigerians as an endorsement of President Tinubu despite controversies surrounding historical court records in the United States.

“We have shared the video with senior members of the President Donald Trump Administration. In the coming days, we will also share it with Members of Congress and the State Department. President Tinubu and his associates are attempting to convince Nigerians and the world that President Trump condones the drug trafficking allegations against Tinubu,” the statement read.

The lobbying firm’s intervention follows comments reportedly made by Ambassador Ibrahim during a television interview weeks earlier in which he suggested that President Tinubu was expected to hold talks with President Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The allegations referenced by the lobbying group relate to decades-old civil forfeiture proceedings in the United States, which have remained a recurring issue in Nigeria’s political discourse. President Tinubu has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has maintained that he has never been convicted of any drug-related offence in the United States.

As preparations continue for the annual gathering of world leaders, neither the Nigerian Presidency nor the White House has officially confirmed that a bilateral meeting between Presidents Tinubu and Trump has been scheduled.

The United Nations General Assembly remains one of the world’s most significant diplomatic forums, providing heads of state opportunities to address global issues while engaging in high-level bilateral meetings on the sidelines.

This year’s summit is expected to focus on international security, economic cooperation, climate action and reforms of global institutions, with world leaders expected to hold dozens of strategic meetings throughout the week-long event.
