BREAKING NEWS: Abia State Govt Bans Commercial Motorcycles in Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia Metropolises

The Abia State Government has announced a ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as “Okada,” within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia, with effect from Monday, June 22, 2026.

The directive, approved by Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, was disclosed in a statement issued by the Honourable Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu.

According to the government, the decision forms part of ongoing efforts to enhance security, improve public safety, and ensure better traffic management across major urban centres in the state. The move is also aimed at promoting a more organized and efficient transportation system in the affected areas.

Authorities stated that all commercial motorcycle operators are expected to comply fully with the directive before the effective date, warning that enforcement agencies have been mandated to ensure strict implementation of the ban.

The government further warned that any operator found violating the order would be arrested, while the motorcycle used in the illegal operation would be confiscated.

The announcement marks a significant shift in the state’s urban transportation policy and is expected to impact thousands of commercial motorcycle riders operating within the three metropolitan areas.

Residents and transport operators have been urged to cooperate with security agencies and relevant government authorities to ensure a smooth transition and effective implementation of the directive.

The Abia State Government reiterated its commitment to policies aimed at safeguarding lives and property while creating a safer and more orderly environment for residents across the state.
