CIoTA Applauds Abia’s Transport Revolution, Hails Otti’s Green Mobility Initiatives
The Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIoTA) has commended the Abia State Government for what it described as remarkable achievements in the transportation sector, particularly in the areas of green transportation, sustainable mobility, and the introduction of electric vehicles.
The commendation came during a courtesy visit to Governor Alex Otti on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at the Government House, Umuahia, where members of the Institute praised the administration’s efforts at transforming the state’s transport landscape and positioning Abia as a model for modern transportation administration in Nigeria.
Leading the delegation, the Chairman, Education and Training of CIoTA, Professor Calistus Ibeh, expressed admiration for the strides recorded by the state government, noting that Abia’s innovations in transportation have attracted national recognition and set a benchmark for other states to emulate.
Professor Ibeh said the Institute’s visit was aimed at identifying and showcasing the state’s transportation successes to Nigerians, while also using the opportunity to formally invite the Abia State Government to participate in its Southeast Conference and National Convention scheduled to commence on June 18, 2026, at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia.
He described Governor Otti as a visionary leader whose prudent management of public resources has transformed Abia into a model of effective governance and transportation innovation.
According to him, “We have seen what Abia is doing in transportation and we cannot keep silent about it. What I used to hear about green transportation in advanced countries, I have now seen in Abia.
“The State is pioneering organised transportation, electric buses and sustainable mobility solutions. Governor Alex Otti is using the people’s resources for the benefit of the people and creating lasting value.”
Professor Ibeh further encouraged the state government to sustain its investments in transportation infrastructure and professional development, stressing that such commitments are vital for economic growth, competitiveness, and long-term national development.
Responding on behalf of Governor Alex Otti, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, thanked the Institute for recognizing the administration’s achievements in the transport sector.
He described transportation as a critical driver of economic development and noted that the conference theme, “Advancing Urban Transport Through Sustainable Urban Mobility and Green Energy Solutions,” aligns closely with the vision and developmental agenda of the Abia State Government.
According to him, “Without transportation, the economy would be completely shut down. Going green is the way to go, especially in view of the devastating effects of climate change.
“This administration is committed to building an eco-friendly transportation system that supports sustainable development.”
The Governor noted that upon assumption of office in 2023, his administration declared a state of emergency in critical sectors, with infrastructure receiving top priority due to its direct impact on transportation and economic activities.
He disclosed that more than 414 roads have either been constructed or rehabilitated across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state, significantly improving connectivity, easing movement, and stimulating commercial activities.
Governor Otti also highlighted strategic infrastructure projects currently underway, including the Abia Airport project at Nsulu and ongoing feasibility studies for the proposed seaport project. He described both initiatives as integral components of the state’s comprehensive transportation master plan aimed at driving industrialization and economic expansion.
The Governor emphasized that the administration’s transportation agenda extends beyond road infrastructure to the development of a multimodal transport system capable of repositioning Abia as a leading commercial and manufacturing hub in Sub-Saharan Africa.
According to the Governor, “Abia is regaining its lost glory as a foremost manufacturing centre, and transportation remains the platform through which goods and services reach end-users.
“Through sustained investment in transportation, we are enhancing the quality of life of our people, reducing environmental pollution and creating a healthier and more prosperous society.”
He assured the Institute of the state government’s continued support for initiatives that promote professionalism, innovation, and excellence within Nigeria’s transportation sector.
The visit was attended by key stakeholders in the transport sector, including the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu; the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport, Dr. Obioma Nwaogbe; a retired Permanent Secretary in the civil service and Coordinator of CIoTA in the Southeast, alongside other officials and members of the Institute.
The engagement underscored growing recognition of Abia State’s transportation reforms and reinforced the administration’s commitment to sustainable mobility, green energy solutions, and infrastr
ucture-driven economic development.
