June 15, () — Legendary South African jazz pianist and composer, Abdullah Ibrahim, has died at the age of 91.

His family confirmed that he passed away peacefully in Germany on Monday, June 15, after a short illness, surrounded by his loved ones.

Born Adolph Johannes Brand in Cape Town in 1934, Ibrahim enjoyed a music career that spanned more than seven decades. He was widely known for blending jazz with traditional South African sounds, creating a distinctive style that earned him global recognition.

Originally known as Dollar Brand, he changed his name after converting to Islam in 1968. He was also a founding member of the Jazz Epistles, one of South Africa’s most influential jazz groups.
