Super John McGinn Secures Dream World Cup Comeback Win For Scotland
June 14, (THEWILL) — Scotland marked their long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Haiti in their opening Group C fixture on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium.
Making their first appearance at football’s biggest tournament since France 1998, the Scots ended a 28-year absence in style, with captain John McGinn providing the decisive moment that secured all three points.
The match began at a lively pace, with both teams eager to make an early statement. Scotland gradually gained control of proceedings and came close to opening the scoring through Scott McTominay, who first headed over the crossbar before rattling the woodwork moments later.
Their persistence eventually paid off in the 28th minute.
Winger Ben Doak sparked the move with a skilful run and dangerous delivery into the penalty area. Ché Adams was unable to beat Haiti goalkeeper Johny Placide from close range, but the loose ball fell kindly for McGinn, who reacted quickest to force it home. A slight deflection on its way in left Placide stranded as Scotland celebrated their first World Cup goal in nearly three decades.
The strike also saw McGinn write his name into the record books. At 31 years and 238 days old, the Aston Villa midfielder became Scotland’s oldest-ever World Cup goalscorer, surpassing the mark previously held by legendary forward Kenny Dalglish.
Haiti refused to surrender and created opportunities to salvage a result in the second half. Wilson Isidor came close in the 74th minute after meeting a cross from Ruben Providence, while Frantzdy Pierrot’s header drifted narrowly wide with six minutes remaining.
Despite the late pressure, Steve Clarke’s side remained composed at the back and successfully protected their slender advantage until the final whistle.
Clarke praised his players for handling the occasion and delivering a historic result for Scottish football.
The victory lifts Scotland to the top of Group C following the earlier 1-1 draw between Brazil and Morocco, giving the Tartan Army plenty of encouragement ahead of tougher tests to come.
For Haiti, who are competing in only their second World Cup and first since 1974, the wait for a first point on the global stage continues.
Scotland will face Morocco in their next Group C fixture on June 19, while Haiti take on tournament favourites Brazil on the same day.
