IPOB Suspends Office Of Leader, Radio Biafra Directorate

June 19 () — The Directorate of State (DOS) of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the indefinite suspension of the Office of the Leader of the movement and the position of Director of Radio Biafra, both currently associated with Nnamdi Kanu.

The decision, which takes immediate effect, was conveyed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Head of the Directorate of State, Chikadibia Edoziem, and is expected to remain in force pending further notice.

According to the statement, the move forms part of ongoing administrative and organisational restructuring within the separatist group to strengthen internal discipline and safeguard its operational structure.

The DOS explained that the suspension was necessary to protect the organisation, its members, and what it described as the broader Biafran mission. It added that the decision also seeks to prevent perceived security risks and reduce actions that could contribute to instability in the South-East region.

The group further alleged that certain individuals and factions have been operating under the name of IPOB without authorisation, engaging in activities it said were inconsistent with the movement’s objectives. It stressed that any unlawful actions carried out under the suspended offices should not be attributed to IPOB but to those responsible.

The Directorate maintained that the measure was aimed at curbing what it described as “reckless conduct” and unauthorised claims of authority, warning that such actions could expose members to arrests, torture, or even death.

It also declared that IPOB would no longer assume responsibility for actions taken by individuals who do not hold active positions within the organisation or who have not been formally approved by the DOS to act on its behalf.

The decision, according to the statement, was reached during a meeting held on June 17, 2026, after deliberations on what the group described as the long-term interest of Biafrans.

IPOB also reiterated its position that the movement was established and sustained collectively by Biafrans in the diaspora and not by any single individual. It argued that no person, regardless of status, has the authority to dissolve the Directorate of State, which it described as the highest governing body of the organisation.

Consequently, the group dismissed any reported attempts to dissolve the DOS, describing such moves as invalid and urging members of the public to disregard them.

The Directorate also cited several reasons for its decision, including internal intelligence reports alleging meetings involving security agencies and Kanu, concerns over communications it claimed had led to arrests and deaths of members, as well as fears that some individuals were attempting to establish a new militia that could trigger further violence in the region.

It said it had reviewed multiple intelligence inputs from its internal structures, which raised concerns about developments it believes could undermine the future of the movement.

The DOS warned that, if left unchecked, such issues could weaken or potentially dismantle IPOB’s organisational framework.
