Abia State Hosts Maiden Mathematics Kings and Queens Competition as Over 600 Pupils Participate
The Abia State Government has recorded another milestone in its drive to promote academic excellence with the successful hosting of the maiden edition of the 2026 Abia State Mathematics Kings and Queens Competition, an initiative aimed at fostering a stronger interest in Mathematics among young learners across the state.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR.
Prince Kanu announced that the Ministry, in collaboration with the National Mathematical Centre, Abuja, successfully organised the competition, which attracted more than 600 pupils and students from both public and private schools across Abia State.
He noted that the impressive turnout reflected the growing enthusiasm for academic excellence and the government’s commitment to creating opportunities that challenge students intellectually while preparing them for future success in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)-related fields.
Highlighting the objectives of the initiative, the Commissioner said the competition was designed to strengthen students’ interest in Mathematics and promote healthy academic rivalry among schools.
“This competition is designed to encourage our children to develop a positive attitude towards Mathematics while rewarding excellence and inspiring healthy academic competition,“ Prince Kanu said.
The Mathematics Kings and Queens Competition is expected to become a major annual academic event in the state, reinforcing the Alex Otti administration’s commitment to improving educational standards, identifying gifted learners, and nurturing the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers through quality education.
